NATIONAL SURFING RESERVES: BIG WEEKEND FOR GOLD COAST SURF COMMUNITY
Friday, 6 July 2012

Last Saturday in sunshine and pumping waves, two Gold Coast Point Breaks were officially declared 'Surfing Reserves'. Representatives from the National Surfing Reserves, Surfing Queensland, local Boardriding clubs and Gold Coast City Council were on hand to unveil the impressive black monolithic plaques at Currumbin Alley and Snapper Rocks.

Surfing reserves was the brainchild of Brad Farmer, a former Gold Coast foundation president of Surfrider who began 19 years ago sowing the seeds of establishing protection for our World Class breaks. Burleigh Point will be celebrated at the end of the month during the annual Joe Engel Cup.

Wilf Ardill spoke about how in the 70s, the "Minister of Everything", larger than life, Russ Hinze was convinced by passionate locals not to go ahead with a proposed marina and casino planned for Currumbin Alley.

At Snapper Rocks, local surfing stalwarts of the Snapper Surfriders Club, Bruce Lee and Wayne Deane together with SurfWorld Gold Coast chairman Mal Sutherland unveiled a similar sponsored Gold Coast City Council Plaque in front of many patrons of the Rainbow Bay Surf Club.
