SURFING AUSTRALIA ASSEMBLES SPORTS SCIENTISTS FOR CONFERENCE
Wednesday, 21 December 2011

Surfing Australia has assembled some of Australia’s top sports scientists as part of its Sports Science and Medicine Advisory Panel at Casuarina in northern NSW. The two-day gathering attracted more than a dozen leading sports scientists and was designed to allow the Surfing Australia High Performance Program to tap into and seek advice from the panel’s vast depth of knowledge.

The Surfing Australia High Performance Program is overseen by National Coaching Director Martin Dunn and Sports Science Manager and Head of Strength and Conditioning Dr Jeremy Sheppard. “We’ve been really lucky to attract people like Professor Chris Gore who is head of physiology at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and a world leader in many areas of physiology,” Dr Sheppard said.

“There is also Dr Gary Slater from the University of the Sunshine Coast and who works with the Wallabies, and Professor Damian Farrow from the Victoria University and has a joint appointment with the AIS. He is consulting with us on skill acquisition issues so his relationship with us is something we are very fortunate to have.

“We’re growing our scope of services so it’s nice to have this panel to continually vet information and plans as we progress and create new ideas and research initiatives. It’s certainly something we’ll be doing on an ongoing basis.” Building continues on the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina with the world’s first dedicated centre of excellence for surf training expected to be completed by May, 2012.
