BIG STICK LOGJAM ON AGAIN
Monday, 28 March 2011

The Big Stick Surfing Association will once again host the Logjam! contest in Santa Cruz CA, its 11th edition. Drawing hundreds of spectators over the weekend, it’s a rare opportunity to see some elegant, old-school surfing, a skillful style born of the era's big, heavy boards. A new wooden board division has been added this year and spectators can witness a little history in the making with alaias, olos, hot curls and hollows surfed in a contest.

Slotted for April 16-17, contest rules at the Logjam! require contestants to ride boards made before 1970 and no leashes are allowed. Past winners have included surf stars Robert "Wingnut" Weaver (a four-time winner), CJ Nelson, Joel Tudor, Bob Pearson, Jay Moriarity, Dane Perlee, Terry “Simba” Simms, and Michel Junod.

The last two years the contest saw perfection with head-high south swells hitting with a light offshore wind - perfect conditions for an "old-board-no-cord" contest and a weekend on the beach, enjoying the sunshine and some barbecue cooked up by local community group the Pleasure Point Night Fighters.

From it’s inception in 2001 to the present, the Logjam! has raised and donated over $40,000 to worthy causes such as Ride A Wave and the Junior Guards, as well as providing scholarships to surfer/scholars from local high schools who are going on to college. The Logjam! has also donated $8,000 to help needy and disabled kids have a day at the beach thanks to Ride A Wave,  and proudly supports local organizations protecting the coast: the Santa Cruz Surfrider Foundation and Surfer’s Environmental Alliance.

This year’s Logjam! is also fondly dedicated to the Memory of Mark Nelson.
