VON WEIRDOS ADD JOE LARKIN REPLICA MODELS TO THEIR ONLINE EMPORIUM
Tuesday, 24 November 2009

Von Weirdos, the online surf trading emporium has taken on the distribution of Joe Larkin Limited Edition Signature Series Boards.

"We have sold several of Joe's Okanui Display Model over the last 12 months, and are now marketing his top of the range Balsa Gun Model. There is a steady demand for these replicas from both the collector market and the commercial sector, so more models will come online in 2010," said Darryl Miller, Managing Director of Von Weirdos.

Joe has been making surfboards since 1949, initially manufacturing 16 foot racing boards in Sydney at Freshwater Beach. As part of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic celebrations, the American surf lifesaving team displayed their skills on the Malibu boards. This got Joe (among others) thinking. Initially, balsa wood was unavailable in Australia so Joe made his own "version" using a wooden frame and marine plywood. Thus began the era when surfing took off and Australia came of age on the waves.

In the '60s, Joe set up shop in Kirra, Queensland and continued experimenting with board design. For 60 years this master craftsman has been known in the industry for his innovations, attention to detail, and of course, his beautiful handmade boards.

"My Balsa Gun Model is a stunning ten footer with Australian cedar stringers, nose and tail blocks and timber fin. The balsa used is the finest New Guinean timber money can buy, and the finish is exceptional," said Joe Larkin.

Von Weirdos is the preferred and reliable choice for surf and beach culture collectors. They always have a unique selection of original vintage surfboards, skateboards and surfing memorabilia for purchase, with new items listed daily.
