NEWS ALERT: AUSTRALIA DAY PADDLE OUT AT KIRRA ON MONDAY 26TH JANUARY 2009
Friday, 23 January 2009

Kirra Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland.

Kirra Paddlers need to register at 9am (QLD)

In order to create the Map of Australia in the Ocean at Kirra on Australia Day, the Paddlers will need to register at 9am in front of the Kirra Surf Club on Monday 26th January.

The protest Paddle Out organised by the Kirra Surfriders Club in conjunction with the Kirra Surf Club and the Surfrider Foundation will attempt to create history by shaping the Map of Australia in the water.

Favourable paddling conditions are forecast for Australia Day with sunny weather, a 1 metre east swell and light south winds.

Some of Australia’s biggest names in surfing have supported the protest including former World Champion Mick Fanning, 2 times World women’s champion Stephanie Gilmore, no 2 men’s in the world Bede Durbidge and no 4 Joel Parkinson.

The Paddlers need to register by 9am and the Paddle Out commences at 10.30am.

The Rally has been planned to focus on the problems of the lack surf at Kirra Point, the devastation of marine reefs, and an over supply of sand on the beach which has left the one time iconic beach and surf break reduced to a deserted oasis caused by the Tweed sand by-pass operation.
