FEATURES Mr Pickle Gun U.S. photographer Chris Klopf reckons Tyler “Pickle” Warren is the best traditional-styled longboarder in the U.S. today. But he’s much more than that. This surfer, artist and shaper is the absolute personification of California cool and is the “real deal”. His art sells in galleries for good prices, he rides and shapes boards from 4’11” to 9’6” and until recently signing with Billabong (hope he’s already got the cheque) he was the face of the ultra-stylish Yellow Rat label. He’s one of Klopf’s favourite subjects and has been travelling with him annually to Central America. Here we feature some of his favourite shots with words from Pickle himself explaining the merits of the various boards featured. Older readers will see the reflection of early Mike Hynson. Same Same but Different Moonie, who seems to spend most of his time these days in Taiwan where the rumours involve nuclear-powered surf equipment and Mata Hari-type exotic maidens, hopped over to Bali to catch up with Taylor Jensen and Jai Lee. While the general perception of the boys is that they are at opposite ends of the longboarding continuum; the former a ripper, the latter a traditional stylist, the reality is that they are both phenomenal surfers on all equipment, single, tri and even short. And here’s the evidence! Happy Lobsters A group of girls, a couple of hunky blokes and Swilly, all in the Maldives together and you have magazine photo eye candy of the highest order. Swilly reckons this was one of his best trips to the Atolls, and he’s been there heaps of times. More than happy traveller Jess Roberts provides the words and interesting title. Ol’ Agnes A few months back we were casually shown a photo of three blokes perched on top of a rough makeshift hut back in the early ‘70s. We asked a few questions and it turned out there was an interesting story attached about the venue, Agnes Water, and particularly one of the surfers involved, Kevin J. Lovett who soon after, moved on to discover the Indo perfection of Nias. Kev’s still over there and shared this intriguing tale of his early adventures in Joh’s redneck coastal Queensland. Lost in Translation Jimmy O’Keefe was searching for surf in Vietnam when a broken tooth forced him into the clutches of a local dentist. An hilarious tale of adventure and misunderstanding in the increasingly popular destination for intrepid travellers. Beachcomber Mick and his Board Hoard Are you one of those guys who cringes when you announce to the missus, mum or whoever the authority figure is in your house, that a new board is to be ordered, or that a fabulous old pair of original Rip Curl shorts from the ‘70s can be purchased for the bargain price of $100? Well Beachcomber Mick has no such problems, Mrs Mick is fully supportive and she’d have to be, there’s hardly enough room for the two of them at home with all the “collectibles”. Board wax, business cards, T-shirts, sunnies, leggies, vinyl LPs – you name it, as well as the usual surfboards, skateboards etc. Marcus James describes the amazing scenes and Robbie O’Brien was behind the lens. DEPARTMENTS Page Three Girl Oahu native Rachel Spear. Fab photos by Jim Russi. The Buzz PT in Seppoville, openings, good deeds, and even the odd contest update, we have the news that’s new. Grey Guru Hob-nobbing seems to be the GG’s sole purpose in life at the moment and nothing wrong with that given the quality of the food and bev. Kate Bosworth and Darryl Hannah join the usual surf groms like Layne, Buzzy K etc competing to hang out with our hero at the opening of a new 6 –star resort in the Maldives. As they would! Cutting Edge Age editor and author of Bells, the beach the surfers, the contest, Michael Gordon reviews recent books by Phil Jarratt and John Witzig while Cammo checks out Jim Russi’s recent book of his surf photography.
